Biography:
D.W. Rutledge was one of the most successful coaches in Texas high school football history.  His teams advanced to seven 5A state championship games, winning four in 1988, 1992, 1993 and 1995.  Rutledge served as an assistant coach from 1975-1983.  In 17 seasons at Converse Judson as Head Coach he compiled a 198-31-5 record, won 12 district championships, 10 City Championships, 10 Regional Championships, 7 State Finalist, 4 State Championships and advanced the Rockets to the playoffs 16 times.

Rutledge has served on numerous coaching committees, was a member of the THSCA Board of Directors and elected THSCA President in 1994-95. In 1996, he was elected to coach the South All-Star Football squad in the THSCA All-Star Football Game, beating the North Squad 27-16.  He has been named “Coach of the Year” seven times and named “Coach of the Decade” for the 80’s and 90’s; and in 1998 named “Greater San Antonio Sportsman of the Year” all by the San Antonio Express News. In 2000, he was presented with the prestigious Tom Landry Award, recognizing him as “a positive role model and a credit to the coaching profession”.   D.W. is also co-author of the character curriculum entitled “Coaching to Change Lives”.

In 1986, he was inducted into the Texas Lutheran College Hall of Honor where he captained their 1974 National Championship team and was a Kodak All-American linebacker for Coach Jim Wacker. In 1996, Texas Lutheran honored Coach Rutledge with their Distinguished Alumni Award. Coach Rutledge was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in Waco Texas in 2003 and in 2005 was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor. On October 20th, 2006, Judson ISD honored D.W. by renaming their football stadium after him – it is now known as “D.W. Rutledge Stadium”.

In September of 2003, D.W. became the Executive Director of the Texas High School Coaches' Association, the largest association of its kind in the nation. He is currently serving on the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Medical Advisory Committee; the Gatorade National Coaches Advisory Council and is on the Board of Directors of the National Organization of Coaches Associations’ Directors.

D.W. and his wife Kathy, have one son Clint, who graduated from Baylor University and is now living in New Braunfels, Texas with his wife Jamie and 2 children, Raylee (5) and Ryder (2).
