Biography:
Joe played Quarterback for the 1972 State Finalist Team and graduated High School in Lewisville, Texas, class of 1974. He then moved on to play football at Eastern New Mexico University, and as quarterback for the team received the MVP award in 1977. In October of 2007 Coach Martin will be inducted into the Eastern New Mexico Greyhound Hall of Honor.

After college he moved back to Texas and completed coaching stints at Denton HS and Groesbeck HS. While serving as an Assistant Coach at Denton High School he attended North Texas State University and received a Masters in Education. Upon graduation he took a head coaching job at Lake Dallas High School where he held the school record for number on wins. After leaving Lake Dallas, he moved for a brief time to Mabank HS as Athletic Director/Head Football Coach. In 1992 he coached the 55th Annual Oil Bowl Game in Wichita Falls, and moved to Garland HS. In his nine seasons at Garland, Joe was elected District Coach of the Year 6 times. In 1999, Garland HS won the Division II 5A State Championship, and Coach Martin was chosen NFL High School Coach of the Year, Texas Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year and Reebok Class 5A Coach of the Year. Joe is the winningest coach in Garland HS history with a record of 81-22-3 (.764) and was inducted into the Garland Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2001 he took the Head Coaching job at Allen HS where he was again selected District Coach of the Year 2 times and NFL Coach of the Week. He advanced the Eagles to Division II 5A Semi-finals in 2003 and upon completion of the season took a job with the THSCA as Assistant Executive Director. He finished his coaching career with a record of 150-54-4.

Coach Martin has served as a Board of Director for the THSCA and as THSCA President in 2003. In 1994 he served on the Football All-Star Selection Committee and would later Coach the All-Star Game in 2001.

Joe now resides in Bulverde, Texas with his wife of 29 years, Peggy. They have two sons, Josh and Ryan. Josh graduated from Smithson Valley HS in Spring of 2007 and now attends and plays football at Tarleton State University in Stephenville. Ryan is a sophomore at Smithson Valley playing both Football and Basketball for the Rangers.
